National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma
Message from Prime Minister Dr Sein Win on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's 60th Birthday

June 19 marks the birthday of 1990 Nobel Peace Laureate and General Secretary of the
National League for Democracy Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and this day is also unofficially
celebrated as the Women of Burma Day. We join the world in commemorating this most
auspicious occasion in her honor.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the most significant political leader in Burma not because she
represents the democracy movement, is strongly committed to helping the people of Burma
realize their aspirations for freedom and human rights, or is devoted to helping our ethnic
kith and kin regain their self-determination rights and equality, but because she is sincere in
her willingness to work with all, including the generals, in peacefully searching for a solution
to bring about national reconciliation, peace, and development to the country. In other words,
despite the sacrifices to her personal well-bring and family life, she has continued to devote
her existence not just to bringing about political change in the country but to promote the
interests of the people of Burma, including the military personnel.
Despite her goodwill toward them, the Burmese generals have continued hurling sham
accusations making fabricated charges, and concocting outright lies against her, alleging her
of being a spy and a traitor working for "neocolonialists" and "imperialists". Judging from
the reaction of the Burmese generals superficially, it appears as if the Burmese military has
misunderstood Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's good will. In actual fact the generals well
understand what she stands for and are in fact intimidated by her stance for fairness, truth,
and justice.
